G mail set up as exchange

It seems that I am not the only one having trouble setting this up. I will be the first to tell you that I am not a very savvy tech person but I can follow directions. Can someone post clear step by step directions to get this set up and working. I want to push e mail, sync it with my iMac for contacts and iCal.

Apple business told me that I cannot set us g mail as exchange unless I have an exchange server. I that true?

I've done this multiple times. If I ever forget it, I always go to this site.

To sync iCal just use iCloud.

Agreed and maybe your contacts as well. I've never used Gmail for anything but mail. I'm not saying it's not a good service, I'm just used to Apple's iCloud. It's seamless with my MBP. Plus, it's free now.
