Hi I am in the Uk I just Picked up a 1999 G3 & I need a compatible keyboard & mouse then advice how to factory restore I new to macs I just like vintage stuff & would love to get this machine up Running it powers up & asks for the last owner’s password any advice much appreciated

The original install and restore CDs are available here, although it looks like you need to be a "member" to download them. I'm not sure whether there's a charge for this, and I can't find them on an alternative site.

Edit: Actually, that doesn't seem to be the right set; it seems there were multiple "iMac DV" models. It looks like you have this one, which originally came with OS 8.6 (as opposed to the 9.0.4 linked above).

Always better to start with Macintosh Garden. The Garden does not require login, although for various reasons they are trying to stay out of Google search results - so searches should actually be done on the site itself.

My understanding is that there is some history between the Repository and the Garden and part of it's due to requirements that the Repository imposes on users.

Ok thanks ! when I fire it up it is asking for the last owners log in password, I maybe able to get it but it was given to me via free cycle & I don’t want to hassle for it if I don’t need to any ideas what I should do ?

Here is another link besides Nermal's which shows all the models. Based on your pic, yours is the one at the top.

Also a link with a list of various sites that host legacy Apple system software.

Here is the set for OS9: https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/ma...igabit-ethernet-pb-g3-firewire#iMac_DV_400MHz

They have an 8.6 set, which is the earliest version this Mac can run - but not a machine specific set.

OSX, OP can just use a retail CD I'd expect.
Looking more closely at the dates, it appears that this machine was released less than a month before OS 9, so the vast majority would have shipped with OS 9. That explains why OS 9 restore images seem to be more "available" than OS 8.6 images.

If I recall correctly, OS 9 would have been a free upgrade anyway, as I'm pretty sure it was free if you'd bought an OS 8.6 machine in the 60(?) days before OS 9's release. I don't like playing licence police, but in this case I don't think there's a problem with downloading the OS 9 image for this particular model.

OS 9 doesn't usually have a password. So if you can get a CD to boot go into the System folder and trash the Multiple User Preferences file. You should then be able to boot normally to the hard drive and access anything on the computer.

You should not have to reinstall the operating system.

Thanks so much for all the advice I gunna go through it slowly! 😊👍
Pete
This is your exact machine based on the serial number:

A generic OS9 or Tiger install is recommended - bypassing the password and using the existing OS might have you inheriting the previous owner's problems.

most of what is on the macintosh repository is just stolen from the garden and locked behind a paywall. that is why i never use macintosh repository.
