I was just wondering if anyone had any insight if an external SSD to firewire 400 (SSD saturated) would make for a faster boot drive in a G3 iMac 500 (DV) than being installed internally using a sata to IDE bridge?

FireWire 400 maxed out at about 38 megabytes a second. The iMac's internal ATA/33 bus maxed out at about 31 megabytes. But the internal bus has lower latency and is better able to work with a high volume of commands. Where as the FireWire controller can get bogged down quickly.

thanks for the response

I will give both sides a good test this evening

On another note are a few averaged runs of xbench still a good indicator of HDD speed?

kind regards:)
