I've just noticed - the last couple of times that I started my iMac the startup sound didn't sound. It's weird - because everything loads ok.... Any ideas?

Make sure your volume is not turned down or muted. If it is muted or very low when you turn off the machine, you won't hear the startup sound.

My old ibook didn't make the startup sound when you had not shut it down correctly, could it be anything related to that?

I would be happy if the start up sound disappeared. I think it's very annoying and I wish I could get rid of it or change it somehow. Are you sure you want to hear it again? Someone please let me know if there is a way to get rid of it.

I haven't shut it down improperly, and I checked- my volume levels in System Prefrences are as they should be. Not that I love the sound, but I'm confused as to why it's gone. Any other ideas?

The startup chime disappeared on my powerbook recently too...

... and I never changed the volume (the builtin speakers are really terrible)
