I've been pondering something for a while, but spent some time playing around tonight and have pretty much confirmed what I knew all along. I don't have benchmark numbers(I don't even know if there are any benchmarking programs for OS 9) but am going by general feel.
I'm comparing a 500mhz Pismo to a 366mhz Clamshell FW.
On paper, the Pismo should be much faster. Not only is it higher clocked, but it also has nearly double the RAM(1gb vs 576mb). The graphics are equivalent(Rage 128 w/8mb VRAM), although admittedly the Pismo is pushing more pixels.
The only real difference I can think of is the hard drive. The Clamshell has its factory 10gb HDD. I think it's probably 4400 RPM, and makes one heck of a racket. I upgraded the Pismo drive to a 60gb 5400 rpm(that's close to silent).
Both have Tiger installed, but are run in 9.2.2 90% of the time.
In use, the Pismo feels very "laggy." Pushing UI windows around and doing things like that have a noticeable delay on the Pismo. Gaming performance on the Pismo is abysmal, with some games lagging so much as to be unplayable.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what could be going on? My only potential thought is that maybe the HDD I put in the Pismo is bad, and is something I can certainly try, but is there something else obvious I could be missing?
