G3 Powerbook(firewire) CD drive nightmare

I have an external Que! drive, but it's not firewire.
Will you PB read cd's in the native tray?
Try the cable on the external drive.
Check the extensions, perhaps there is a conflict (possible if your using os9)
Try your drive on another computer, see if it's the drive.
Your computer may try to intlize an unrecognized and unformated disk, but it should ask for premission. I don't know. It seems odd. Need input.
