I was poking around on ebay a few weeks ago and saw a cheap slot-loading combo drive from a G4 ibook and figured I'd see if it could be installed in a G3 ibook. Physically, not much of an issue. Have to grind down a couple bits of the inside of the bezel but that's minor. The problem seems to be that there isn't an obvious way to set the drive to slave.

The old ibook drive has a 3-position switch. Cable Select/Slave/Master. Since they're on the same IDE channel, it's set to slave. But the G4's slot-loading drive doesn't have a similar switch or jumper and, from the stubby little cable it had attached, I'm guessing it plugs into the secondary IDE channel as a master. When I plugged it into the G3 ibook's cable, I was unable to boot. So I've got two questions:

1) Am I correct in thinking the optical drives in the G4 ibooks are configured as the master device on the secondary IDE channel?

2) Is there a way to set the optical drive from a G4 ibook to slave?
