G4 iMac won't take DVDs

I've read that using 8x blank DVDs in the 2x G4 iMac Superdrive will work fine.

When I stick a 8x blank DVD into my Superdrive, the iMac spends a minute fiddling with it, then spits it back out.

What happened?
