I'm trying to find quiet a replacement fan for the papst 4212h that's currently installed. Problem is I can't find anything that comes close to the 108 CFM and that is quiet. I did see some recommendations for the Silverstone FM-122 but that is below the 108 CFM and I would be worried with duel 1.42 Ghz procs that anything less than 108 CFM could be an issue. Anyone have any suggestions?

Apple's fix for this was to replace the 400W power supply with a 360W power supply. The part number is 661-2816.

I replaced mine during my Mac Genius days—it made a HUGE difference.

So did apple just use some quieter fans in the PSU? I was thinking of swapping the 60*60mm fans in the PSU with some NF-A6x25 FLX. The part number you reference for the PSU looks like its still available for purchase, a bit expensive but never the less available.

I had this experience yesterday. I’m rebuilding a prototype MDD FW800 and was going through a job lot of MDDs I got for parts. The 360W system it was so quiet (comparatively), I thought there was something wrong with it.

It’s the PSU fans that make most of the noise.

Still pretty noisy though, let me know if you find some quiet compatible fans with the same CFM as the originals!

The 360w is quieter from what I've heard. You can also use CHUD 3.5.2 which is available at MacGarden to keep the processors slowed down when not being used. No noticeable performance hit.

Definitely going to be using CHUD to keep the processors in low power mode until needed.

with my mdd, i replaced all the fans and it made it so quiet, it's comparable to a mac pro.

the psu fans i used 2 noctua 60mm fans. the fan connectors i had to switch a couple of pins around and they plugged into the psu pcb just fine.

as for the main 120mm fan, i used a quiet but powerful coolermaster fan that pushed 70+ cfm with a 19db rating.

i also attached 2 slim 60mm noctuas behind the cpu heatsink and they were connected together with a splitter and resistor and then the wires routed to plug into a molex plug.

as for the cd drive exhaust fan, i left that one alone as it worked fine and was quiet.

i also had a couple of noctua 60mm fans for the bottom inlet of the mac. those were connected together with a resister and then connected to a molex plug. as for hard drive space, i only had the rear cage filled so only 2 hard drives were installed on my mac.

last but not least was a quiet 70mm fan i put in place of the speaker hole. since i didn't use the internal speaker for anything, i removed it and put the fan in it's place. all that did was allow fresh air into the top for the psu fans.

for smaller fans, yeah, they are good, but i swear by coolermaster for 120mm fans. the lower db rating, the better
