Hi All,
Mum's 12" 1.5 Ghz PowerBook died yesterday from faulty graphics memory…

Can I move the hard drive from it into a G3 Pismo (FireWire) PowerBook?

I looked on Mactracker, it says the G4 used ATA-6 where the G3 used ATA-5.
Are these compatible? Will the sudden motion sensor in the G4 cause problems on a G3? (as in, the hard disk is expecting the computer to have one).

Thanks :)

I read that only some brands of ATA - 6 drivers (Toshiba I think) were incompatible, so I decided to take the plunge and attempt the transplant. My drive was a Hitachi Travelstar 80 GB.

Well, after two hours of disassembling the G4, I finally had the hard drive free. It was much easier installing into the G3, although I needed to swap the mounting brackets and ribbon cables.

Tried to boot from the disk, got the startup chime, and Panther attempted to load, but was stuck on a blue screen. So I pulled out the original Panther disks, reformatted and installed and is running great so far, with a nice speed bump.

:)
