Totally unrelated to my previous threads about looking to join the Mac Camp, I was just wondering what would be the best OS to stick on a 450MHz G4 Power Mac? and what kind of price (in UK) would be reasonable for such a machine?

I sold my old G4 to a friend five years ago for 1,000 euro, if that's any guide. It is happily running Jaguar, but that's because he's happy with it and sees no reason to try later versions of OSX.

I have a 1.8 GHz upgrade in my Cube and the bottleneck is the 100MHz bus.

It runs Leopard too slowly. 10.4 was better.

yikes, 1000 is pretty steep, although not terrible for 5 years ago. Now you can find a Quicksilver for 200-500 USD depending on what you are looking for, so I would say spend no more than 300 pounds on it, assuming my estimation is correct. I would also look for a quicksilver or mirrored drive door model. these will run much faster, and I believe have the faster system bus, along with several other advantages.

The easiest way to find the right bus is to look for at least an *originally* 1.25 dual machine.

I've seen one sold for £120 these days.

They're not worth more than $200 USD.
