If there was a 970 for around $2000, and it was faster than the Dual 1.42 GHz, wouldn't that mean that the G4's would have to lower in price a lot? It'd be sweet to get a Dual 1.42 GHz model for under $2000 for those who do not need a 970.

who knows....it'd be kinda dumb to keep making dp g4's if a sp 970 is faster, so i expect they'll just kill the dp line.
of course they'll kill the G4 line, but the question is how much the remaining inventory will be discounted. If it's only $200 I just can't see them selling.
Remember when they were trying to get 900 bucks for the old CRT iMac when the eMac was 1000? It took them almost a year, but they sold...
well, it is true that there's a sucker born every minute. If the 970s are as fast as we think, I'd need something like a 40-50% discount to buy a powermac G4. But that's just me.
But not everyone has the $$$ to buy brand new machines at full price. If someone is using a Sawtooth I'm sure they'd jump at the chance to get a discounted MDD when the 970's come out.

yes yes, I agree with you, absolutely. But, let's say iJon is right and the 1.42 dual G4 is only discounted by $100-200. That puts the price at $2500.
Now, unless we are all very wrong (and about to be very disappointed), the 970s will start at more like $1500, just like the base model now.
And if the 970s are as fast as predicted, that "low end" 1.6 Ghz 970 will be as fast or faster than the dual 1.42 Ghz G4 on most tasks.
Unless the price of the high end G4 is cut below the price of the low end 970 (which would be a drop of 40-50% as I said), the low end 970 will be both cheaper and faster.
So certainly, I agree that ppl would jump at the chance to get a discounted MDD. But on the mid and high end machines, price drops of only $100-200 will leave them much more expensive than the low end 970, and not as fast. No one in their right mind would pay more money for a slower and older machine.
Now the disclaimer of course is that if the 970s are 1) not much faster than the G4s, or 2) a lot more expensive than the G4s, then yes, I agree people would jump on the MDDs with only small price drops. But if the prices are similar to the current line and what we have heard about speed is true, buying a G4 at $100-200 off would be insanity.
a very good point. If Apple has no more MDDs left... then what their price should be cut to is a moot point. Good job by apple of clearing their stock I guess. 
I don't think there would be any chance of existing PowerMac G4s selling at only a $200 discount with the low-end G5 being cheaper than the mid and top end model. Even with a single CPU the low-end 1.6GHz G5 will absolutely hammer the dual 1.42GHz G4. Even having the 800MHz FSB alone makes this system worth more than the top-end G4. You'd have to be an idiot to pay more for a G4 than a G5.
You're missing the point. I know that $200 is a lot of money for many people; it's a lot of money for me.
Ok, look - a $200 price drop on any current MDD except for the low end one still leaves them more expensive than the low end 970 (I know that I'm just assuming that it will be $1500 like the current low end tower). Yes, people will technically "save" $200 compared to the current G4 prices, but they will be *losing* $300 (with the G4 dual 1.25) or $1000 (with the dual 1.42) compared to the low end 970 which will also be faster than even the high end G4s.
Are you following my point? It's not really a savings of $200 at all -- it's a loss of $300-1000 compared to the low end 970.
Look at is this way: when the ibooks went to 800 mhz, the 12" combo also dropped from $1500 to $1300. At that time, would it have been a good deal to buy the 700 mhz 12" combo for $1400?
The old model has to cost less than the new one (assuming the new one is better). It really doesn't matter what the old model costs compared to its own former price if it's still more expensive and worse than the new one.
oh i know exactly what you mean, and i completly agree. but trust me, people will take 200 dollars over a new 970, these machines will sell with that price cut. people will see, i get a great machine and i save 200 dollars, not saying these people are the smartest people in the world, but they will sell with any price drop.
