Hi there,

I am helping a friend upgrade his 733MHz G4 Quicksilver. Among other things we are doing is replacing the CDRW with a "superdrive". The primary reason for this is so he can install Tiger via DVD.

I am looking at the Pioneer DVR-112D sold by OWC.

Now, I am aware that certain apps may or may not recognize the new drive, and I am aware of the patchburn fix.

However, what I am unclear on is whether or not I will need to install patchburn(or anything else) prior to installing Tiger. I.E. can I fire up the computer immediately after installing the Pioneer and expect it to read the Tiger DVD?

He is currently running OS 10.1.5 if that makes any difference.

Thanks for your help.

I put the exact same drive in the exact same Mac a couple of weeks ago. Boots from the Tiger DVD, no probs... but haven't tried it with any other app, the QS is my home server and doesn't do anything else.

You can use any IDE DVD-ROM if you just want to read discs. I have a BenQ in a Quicksilver and it reads just fine.

The DVR-112D is a good choice.

Thank you both! Just the answers I was looking for. :)
