g4 towers and the 7457

i was just wondering if apple was still going to be selling the dual g4 towers after the g5's are out. i think the dual g4 tower makes an excellent (cheaper) alternative than a g5 tower. if apple continues to sell/develop these towers, do you guys think apple would eventually use the Motorola 7457's in there? the doubled L2 cache wuld definitely help maybe even a 200mhz bus? or will they just continue to sell the current versions until they run out? these dual g4 machines would suit most people just fine... especially people who want the expandability of a tower (4 hard drives!) and not pay G5 premiums. and at the prices they are at now, it's quite a good deal. it sits in a nice price point between the iMac and G5...

any thoughts?

A dual G4 7457 would be close to the price of the G5. The current offerings are the older design, not the updated one that unveiled earlier this year, the ones with FW800. I don't foresee them updating the current G4. Right now they sell a dual G4 for ~$3300. Even if they dropped the price, it is still in the G5 territory.
 
You mean something like a Single and Dual 1.4 GHz G4 PPC 7457.... in the current MDD cases?
I wonder... a Dual 1.4 G4 7457 (on 200 MHz bus) vs. Single 1.6 Ghz G5.
What would you buy?
Another question would be: would these "new" G4s be able to boot Mac OS 9, like the old 1.25 GHz can? Some companies are still reluctant to the OS X - leap.... maybe some sales there.

Could be a good idea.... could also be cannibalizing the low-end G5 sales. I dunno.
 
Look at the current dual processor G4, it costs more then the Dual G5, but does come with an extra GB of memory though, but still.
 
i think thats what i meant to say.... single and dual g4 7457's in the current MDD case. i dont mind dropping FW800. would the current motherboards support these chips and will they (could they) use the 200mhz bus?

picture it: an 'inexpensive' mac tower has dual 7457's, ata-100, agp4x, usb, FW400. superdrive optional. i think it's possible... but would these chips raise the price compared to the current dual g4's? i mean, this is old technology! :)
 
If you lower it to 512 MB of RAM, it comes out to $2524. That's more money than the 1.8 GHz G5, and I'm pretty sure the 1.8 GHz is faster.

and we all know the prices of the G5 towers.... $1999 (1.6ghz), $2399(1.8ghz),$2999(dual2.0ghz)...
 
Even if they did decide to put the new G4 in them, I would hope they'd focus more on putting them in the new PowerBooks, and possibly a new iMac revision so we don't have sadly limited stock on these. If they start puttinf dual 7457's in older PowerMacs, it would possibly stretch the overall amount they have available for the rest of their products a bit thin.

at the apple store, select the single G4 1.25ghz. on the next page, you can customize it with a dual proc, superdrive, AGP card etc. if you just add a dual proc it's like $1599 and $1799 if you add a superdrive as well. it works out to be cheaper then the other higher end models. however, it does have less RAM and HD space then the high end models, i know, but RAM and HD's are way cheaper when you dont buy them from apple.
 
Once 7447/7457's are common enough to be cost effective, I'd be surprised if they didn't completely replace older G4's in all of Apple's products. They are drop-in replacements, and Moto will probably stop making the older models.
 
A couple of people have said that the OS9 bootable G4 Towers have started showing up in the retail channel again, which is odd.

Could be a chance that the machines will be boosted to 7457s and stick around awhile longer. k-12 still needs them as do the audio crowd and 5v card users.
 
Buy a G4 when a G5 is available?

No thanks. And the 1Q of next year we might see 90nm G5's.

When will we see a 90nm G4?

I agree.

The PM G4 is no longer top of the line and the rest of their lineup can finally get the fastest G4 processors.
 
I think Apple will want to push G5 Power Mac as their top of the line machine. Therefore I don't think they will bother with G4 Power Macs. They might make some available for eduational market, but not for general market.
