g5 dvd burnt

Imac g5 dvd problem.....

Please can anybody advise me on the best course of action. We have an imac g5 version 3: 20" the one with isight, pre intel.. It no longer burns dvds properly although it plays them. We have had the software and settings checked and have been told that the optical drive is faulty. This looks easy enough to change but is it worth it, or is there an upgrade or an external one which is better. I understand that it is quite slow at burning dvds (my wife uses it more than me)

It's probably easier and cheaper to buy an external writer. Most of them support OSX these days.

Thanks for advice I'll try cleaning the drive first though, and then buy an external one when I've broke it altogether..
