My father has been having troubles with his aging iMac for some time, starting with freezes and kernel panics and culminating in the loss of 2 hard drives. Here is his description of the problem:

"My iMac G5 (PowerPC w/iSight) running Leopard 10.5.8 is giving me nightmares. After jet-level fan noises, freezes, involuntary shutdowns 6 months ago, I got a new hard drive 6 months ago. Problems started up again a month or so ago, with added issue of '? folder' at startup. Authorized Apple dealer/repair shop said hardware checked out fine and that it was a failed hard drive. Got another new hard drive, did clean Leopard install, upgraded to 10.5.8 (no other software installed), and began having problems immediately. Again, '? folder' at startup, sometimes with startup completing OK afterward, sometimes not, but also occasionally getting an orange flash on screen after initial gray. Disk First Aid says HD OK, Apple Hardware Test no problems. I'm at my wit's end. Anyone have any idea what might be going on? Thanks."

I would greatly appreciate any help you guys could offer and thank you in advance!
