Hi,

I have a question regarding the compatibility of the various g5 processors / motherboards

I have a couple of broken/semi working g5 powermacs that I might try and resurrect

I'm asking this now in case trying it breaks something, If I have say a working first gen powermacs g5 and a working last gen powermacs 11,2 are the cpu's/motherboards interchangeable between those revisions?

Thanks

No they are not. For instance, there is a physical port incompatibility between 11,2 and the previous models. Compare the back of a 7,3 with a 7,11 and you'll see what ports on the boards will not line up. I am not certain if the 7,2 and 7,3 line up, but I think they do.
Even boards within the same model have different bus speeds depending on the processor speed. That may be a jumper setting; I do not know the answer though.

Thanks,

Yeah it's the compatibility of the 970fx and 970mp that I'm unsure of

There is this video on YouTube where some upgrades a single socket motherboard to a dual 2.5, I can't quite work out if the slower one he removed was a 970fx or 970mp
