I recently picked up a G5 Quad for £20 and have been working on getting it working. I had to replace the power supply as the original was faulty. This got it to booting in to Leopard with the original 1GB ram. As soon as I add any extra ram it seems to ramp up the fan speed. I have tried downloading ASD 2.6.3 but I cant get it to burn to disk or restore to USB as it says the image is corrupt.

Any ideas what my issue might be? The extra ram does show up, it just makes the quad unbearably loud straight from boot. Thermal paste etc is all good as I replaced it and the LCS shows no signs of leaks.

Did you try the one available from macintoshgarden?

Don;t know why I didn't think to look there, giving it a go now.
[doublepost=1560595713][/doublepost]no luck, tried on my PB G4, G5 Quad and PowerMac G4, all of them failed to burn.

I recommend this to everyone that purchases a quad. Install istat menu to monitor the CPU temperature. You may not have an apparent leak in the LCS but that does not eliminate the possibility that small evaporative loses over the years have left the system devoid of cooling liquid.

I think I've found my issue:

I've double checked the fan connector and the cables running in to it so I guess the controller on that fan must have gone bad.

I checked the cables with a multimeter today and all the terminals in the fans are getting a good connection. I've ordered a replacement fan unit off ebay I'm hoping it's just a faulty tach on the fan although I'm not 100% convinced as the mac seemed to know the fan was spinning too fast

Well I'm an idiot, bought another fan unit, same issue. So I checked the wiring more closely and it was caught under the heatsink, got it out and taped up the damaged wire and it was back to normal. Seems to be pretty quiet, what software am I best using to measure CPU temps?
