G5 red light/fan problem

I have a 2x2Ghz, 1Gb RAM, 250GB HD, 128MB 9800 G5 at home which has suddenly started constantly flickering the 'your plastic windshield isn't placed properly' red light and running the drive bay fan at an insanely fast speed.... I've checked the RAM, run apple's extended G5 test (not the hardware test that comes with it, a seperate one) on it which shows no problems... has anyone else had the same problem or know what I should do? Thanks

I had this happen to me too, but I think it was my fault. I had opened the door and somehow put the shield in the wrong way. All I did to fix it was open it again and replace the shield making sure both tabs on the bottom of the shield went in at the same time.

funny, i fixed the exact same problem just now.

the problem is that when the plastic cover is not correctly put into G5, it runs in the "cautionary" mode. (the red light indicates this.) the processor is turned down all the way and the fans come on full blast so that there's no chance of anything getting fried - apparently, that plastic cover does quite a bit to control the airflow.

anyway, the solution is this. take off the plastic cover and look at the notches at the bottom that goes into slots. the one to the rear of the machine should have some white tape over it. i believe it's some sort of magnetic/metalic tape and this needs to correctly cover the tab. when put into the slot, this tells the computer that the plastic cover is correctly in place.

in my case, the tape was a bit mangled and wasn't covering the tab correctly. once i fixed this and put the cover back in place, the G5 was as quiet as expected...

Do any of you guys run your G5 with the metal shiled off. I think it looks cool sometimes. But is this safe to do. I know apple says they recommend keeping it on. The optical drive and hardrive are exposed that could be mad i guess.

red light and only top fan too fast

I have the exact same problem but have checked the plastic buffer (I have actually got a G5 Jam setup - Wiebetechs aluminium shield which holds extra drive bay) the fans at the bottom of the G5 speed up considerably when i remove the plate so the metalic tab works fine. So why does the top fan behind the optical drive keep running so fast? the red light inside above the on button is also constantly on.
Any ideas?

Hmm, I'm not an expert, but that doesn't sound safe to me ...

That's good to know- I had no idea the computer had a warning light for the plastic door. Thanks for the info!
