Game Center keeps saying "can't connect" with friend

My wife and I are trying to play a game called Dominion together over game center but when i try to add her to it (or vice versa) just keeps saying "can't connect". We're both online on the same fast wifi network, both with notifications on.
I'm on iphone 4 she's on ipod 3, both up to date OS.
