So Cal
i want to restore from backup or copy from my current phone. i’m thinking the best thing will be to setup the new 16 as a new device, turn on dev mode, enable dev beta updates, update to 18.1 beta and then reset and setup and transfer data from my 15. how does that sound? any other ideas?

You don't have to do all that. The initial setup will automatically detect that your backup is from a beta and ask if you want to install it on .
Great !! I got nervous 18.1 backup would not work on my 16 pro max

I’m regretting not making a iOS 18 backup, now my backup is 18.1 and that means to restore the new 16pm I need to run 18.1 on the new phone, which I’m not keen on as the battery life has been bad for me on 18.1

This is not correct, unless the 16 ships with 18.1 (which it wont)

It is absolutely 100% correct provided Apple does what it did last year.

Then, if you used Apple’s Setup Assistant to facilitate the transfer from an old to a new phone and were running a beta on your old device, a prompt appeared stating that the Assistant was aware that you had a beta on the old device. It then asked if you wanted to install the beta on your new device before proceeding. If you answered “yes”, the beta would install on your new device before the data from your old device was transferred.

I fully expect Apple to have that process in place again this year. For one, it saves them a lot of support headaches.

Fingers crossed the 16 doesn’t ship with 18.1 as my iPhone 14 PM is on 18. I’m also concerned slightly about copying data over.

No worries, iPhones 16 will all ship with iOS 18.0, as 18.1 is still in beta until the second half of October.

If you currently run iOS 18.0 beta, which will be publicly released on Monday, you can transfer your data in any possible way (direct iPhone to iPhone or via iCloud or computer backup).

If you currently run iOS 18.1 beta, during the setup process you will be offered to install the beta again, making it possible to transfer your data.

Thanks so much for the explanation, appreciated. I’ve come off beta updates since the last 18 beta incarnation, I’m assuming mine will remain RC should the public release be the same build number and if not my device will update. ?

Yes. But it won’t be labeled as the RC anymore.

I misunderstood your post and that caused me to misspeak. I read it as if you meant you’d be able to restore the 18.1 backup to the 18.0 phone. Apologies for the misread on my part.
