Just got a 17 pm and a small piece of debris got stuck between the edge of the glass screen and the casing, I could not brush it away using a soft cloth so had to use the corner of a piece of paper to get it out, and then noticed the paper can easily go down in between the edge of the glass and casing, all around the whole phone.

Should this be normal being as it is meant to be IP68 water and dust resistant ?

I think it’s pretty normal - some are different than others from what I’ve seen in the Apple Store, mine and then my friends Pros. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Good luck.

Why do some of these 17 range of phones have gaps between the glass and the frame, I just returned a 17PM which had it, got the smaller and lighter 17 and it’s the same, I can put two pieces of paper all the way into the phone with ease !

So dust and debris can easily end up getting trapped in there, like if you put your phone in your pocket etc.

Right out of the box there is some damage on the frame as well, which is what lead me to seeing if it would wipe off as it looked like something was stuck in between.

Nightmare quality control 😟

We let you know a few days ago that this is normal and within tolerances. Now you come back and complain about quality control? I mean we are talking roughly about a 0.10mm gap where the glass meets the aluminum. Sometimes, I don’t understand people on this forum…

This is normal and has no impact on IP rating. Imagine a fixed car window — the gasket isn’t sealed at the very edge of the glass, it’s inward a little bit.

Ok thanks, fair enough i'm sorry you don't understand people like me, i am just confused as to how it can be dust and water resistant when it clearly has a small gap around some of it. And that anything could end up stuck in the gap that's all.

I was surprised to see this on two different models of phone as well.

Ok thanks for your input on this. Just to add the paper can easily go all the way down into the thickness of the phone, so not just a little bit.

I'm not an engineer, but anytime there isnt a unibody design there are going too be very small gaps. I'm sure someone on here can explain it better than I can, but I'd just use the phone (I always get AppleCare). I'm fairly certain if you have an issue with dust/water impacting the phone Apple will take care of it. Enjoy your phone!

Gap between glass and casing

Partially covered in this review here, viewed under a microscope, at 8:14. It’s in Chinese but there are English subtitles.

BTW, this is one of the best reviews of the iPhone 17 Pro/Max I’ve come across. Extremely thorough, without getting much into benchmarks.

The gap is for the spudger
Ok that makes sense, but if the gap goes all the way down to the back of the phone, meaning the full width of the phone then it can’t be dust and water resistant, can it. Whatever ends up in the gap is not coming back out very easily. For it to be dust and water resistant it should be sealed to some degree ?

Water and dust resistance means water and dust don’t break the functionality of the phone to whatever degree, not that the phone can’t become dirty.

My comment was more tongue in cheek. Take it back to apple and swap it out for a new one, it’s what I’d do given the option.
