Garage Band Guitar Effects Problem

hay everyone, so i just got a macbook and one of the main rasons i got it was for garageband, when i used it around my friends house, i would plug in the guitar and could select from a combinatio of different sounds in the right toolbar thing, but now my macbook has garageband 09 and if i want play guitar i have to chose the stupid electric guitar instrument and i hate it, so i guess wht im asking is how do i revert to the way it used to be in garage band 08 and later, thx
