Garageband 6.0.1 problem

Garageband 6.0.1 won't open a .band file created with garageband for ipad.
I'm running garageband on a 13" macbook with 2gb ram and os 10.6.6

Error message:
This song requires a newer version of GarageBand. Please update to the latest version of GarageBand before opening this song.

6.0.1 is the latest version.
any ideas?
