Garageband as Amp?

If I just want to use my Mac's Garageband (or similar software) as a guitar amp and not to record, what hardware should I get? I've heard that several hardware solution to reduce the latency, but I'm not sure which one would be the best (on a computer and not iPad or iPhone)
