I have a large Garageband file and can not find where it is stored on my Mac HD. I tried to find with both spotlight and the finder to no avail.

Do you mean a GarageBand .band file? If so, I think it's in your normal home folder -> music -> GarageBand.

But can you still open the .band file in Garage Band, even if only via the Recent menu? If so, you could open it again and try to save it as another file.

Does the .band file show up in :apple: > Recent Items > Documents? If so, press the CMD key and click on it to show it in Finder?

When I try the command key it just opens the file in GarageBand.

Okay, is the file a completed GarageBand song or are you looking for a particular loop?
