Apple today updated the GarageBand app on macOS with "important security fixes," but the release notes do not provide any specific details. Mac users should update GarageBand as soon as possible due to potential security vulnerabilities.

GarageBand version 10.4.8 is available on the Mac App Store.

GarageBand is one of Apple's music creation apps alongside Logic Pro. The update for GarageBand was released on the same day as Apple seeded the third betas of macOS 13.3, iOS 16.4, tvOS 16.4, and watchOS 9.4 to developers for testing.

Update: The GarageBand update fixes a pair of vulnerabilities, according to Apple's security page. One vulnerability could allow an app to gain elevated privileges during the GarageBand installation, and with the other, parsing a maliciously crafted MIDI file could lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

"You got problems in your Rock & Roll band?
You got a hacked-up bass?
He's crackin' Macs through an add-on kit,
That's when the trojans race...

Pick up i-Phone, I'm here alone
Prob'ly a Samesung troll...

Text me now, forget that sin
We'll have ourselves a go...

Dirty deeds (done dirt cheap)

Dirty deeds (done dirt cheap)
Dirty deeds and they're done dirt cheap
Dirty deeds and they're done dirt cheap"

When was the last time you used GarageBand? It's been a really long time for me.
Very frequently actually. I have many plugins I use for guitar with it, I record covers and my song for my DnD campaign was recently recorded with GarageBand. It's really good for a free program and I wouldn't benefit from Logic Pro with my current needs. GarageBand is already plugin flexible so can be extended quite a bit with Audio Units and VSTs. It also acts as a great gateway to Logic Pro. Those who do eventually upgrade to Logic will likely have already learned a fair bit with GarageBand and a lot will be directly transferable even if there are some differences in UI and such to learn still there's also a lot of similarities. While Logic has a free trial, the free indefinite nature of GarageBand allows beginners and students to learn with it and makes them more likely to pick Logic over other solutions if they eventually want to upgrade to a bigger tool. That evolution but with iMovie and Final Cut was what made me eventually acquire the entire Final Cut suite with Motion and Compressor. - If I ever want anything bigger than GarageBand I will also be led to Logic.

Someone in Apple remembered this app still exists?

I liked it more when it was paid, because Apple actually had incentive to maintain it and improve functionality at least once in a blue moon. Ever since the iLife and iWork have been made free, it's been nothing but stagnation mostly.

I like the icon though, this icon and couple of others signal that icon elements are allowed to step out of the squircle, unlike on iOS and others where icon elements must be strictly inside the squircle.

Most Apple software is good until you actually use it.

It was my fault guys... I opened GarageBand over the weekend and tried to make a mash-up of Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven with AC/DC's Highway To Hell.

It might not have been technically illegal, but it was certainly a crime against good taste. Anyways, I think this security fix makes it impossible to do that mashup now. We're all a little more safe and secure thanks to Tim. ✌

Is this an earlier mashup attempt...
