GarageBand interface

I am using a recommended M-Audio, Fast Track interface for home recording on GarageBand. All aspects of the interface work really well except that my recorded tracks, which play back very loudly on my Companion 3 system but when I switch to the headphones on the interface, the volume decreases greatly. I'm not sure what the "Monitor on/off" on Garageband does as it has no effect?

Monitoring allows you to listen to yourself performing with a real instrument while its recording. It does not have any effect if you are just playing back previously recorded tracks.
