ok, heres what I have done to set up garageband to record my bass...

System preferences > sound > input, I have set to the audio line in port.

Applications > Utiities > Audio Mini Setup > Default Input is now set to built in input (not the mic)

Garageband > preferences > Audio/Midi > Audio Input > set to built in input (not the mic)

so, i have plugged in my iStudioLink cable, and my bass (which has active pickups) into my mac. when i hit record, garageband records silence...
any help would be greatly appreciated.

do you mean out of the choices in the bottom righ of the screen?

i chose stereo (built in input)...is that correct?

I ended up killing ALL sound on my iMac - input and output, system wide - both times I used an iStudioLink. In both cases the logic board had to be replaced. (Thank you, AppleCare!)

It just seems too weird for it to be merely coincidence. I suggest you look at getting a USB music interface for your instrument.

hmmmm, ive tried mono 1, mono 2, and stereo 1/2 and none of them seem to be picking up sound... is there any way i can test and see if its a fault with the mac?

Line in silence

I can't get my microphone to connect either but here's the kicker: If I plug my headphones into the line in jack, they act like a microphone!
Here are my settings:
