I have a Macbook Pro running OSX 10.9.2. I recently experienced a problem opening files on Garageband, was advised to install the recent updates and that would correct the problem. There is no change since updating Garageband and OSX - the app will load up but the timer icon keeps spinning when I attempt to open any file or any of the drop down menus. Would love some advice on how to solve this problem, please!

I would update the OS to 10.11/El Capitan. There are not many reasons to be running 10.9/Mavericks in 2016 and support for Mavericks (bug fixes/security patches) will likely be discontinued near the end of the year. I recommend doing a clean install as outlined here: http://mashable.com/2015/10/01/clean-install-os-x-el-capitan/#_Ci5hw7YREq6

Make sure you backup everything you want to save to an external hard drive and follow the directions on the link. The newer Garageband versions work marvelous on El Capitan.

EDIT: Also, it's a free upgrade from Mavericks to El Capitan.

Thanks for the advice, my friend. After posting this thread Garageband has resolved its problem after a software update (but not a Garageband update?) Strange behaviour!
I backup with Time Machine to an external HD so that should keep my files safe. A friend had some issues with El Capitan so will have a chat with him first. Cheers.
