Ringtone import from Garageband into iTunes worked for me without a hitch. Synced to my iPhone and was able to select the ringtone as an alarm sound (I have a sound bite of a grandfather clock that I prefer over any of Apple's alarm sounds for waking up in the morning).

Sound quality appears to be limited to 128 kbps.

If only the transform voice function in GB worked properly. For a podcast we were working on we tried transforming a voice from male to female and the quality was crappo with a lot of "warble" sounds amongst the speech.

Nice catch. Maybe people can stop whining about iPhone ringtone pricing (at least those iPhone users with iLife '08 - sorry Windows users).

You missed out on this one. This should have been on the front page and posted on Digg. However, the faux apple fansite TUAW beat you to it.

I always wondered why Garageband didn't have an i at the front... it's like its some kinda rogue iApp that someone snuck into iLife while Steve was on vacation

Not that I mind... the i is starting to wear a bit... thin.

Kind of an FYI for those not familiar with Garageband: non-DRM music can be imported into Garageband (from iTunes, for example). Within Garageband you can then choose a portion of the song to loop. Export it back into iTunes as a ringtone and then sync with iPhone. Voila, easy custom ringtones.

Do I smell a ringtone workaround?

It's not a workaround.Apple saw that people were potentially screwing up their iphone . Smart move on Apple's part.

I'm gonna update Garageband right now and mess with a certain U2 track:

"I'd like to thank, uh... Edge, and Adam and Larry for lettin' me be in their band..." --Bono, near the end of "40" during U2's concert in Dublin on December 31, 1989.

I'm gonna make a ringtone out of that and mail it to The Edge, Adam and Larry to install on their phones... just in case Bono doesn't say it often enough.

Logic gets an update too...

Just saw it in S.U....

Logic 8.01

Just thought some of you might like to know!

I don't think Steve goes on vacation.

It doesn't work with any protected song. That kind of sucks but oh well. I figured if I've bought it, I'll download an unprotected song create my ringtone and delete the song. All is well.

There is a work around for DRM files, its posted in many places and it is not a hack that requires an unlocked iPhone.
