Gchat contacts in Hangouts?

Okay dumb question - why can't I see my Gmail chat contacts in Hangouts app? Yes I know I can search for them but why aren't they there by default? I'm new to Hangouts so not sure if I'm missing something obvious. Looks like you have to invite your friends to Hangouts if you want to IM with them. In my hangouts contact list I only see my iPhone contacts, not all my Gmail contacts. Bizarre.​

Yes,you have to invite them to hangouts before you can see them in your list. That's how it goes.
