The gen 2 HomePod has computational audio, the OG does not. Does this make a difference for watching movies in Dolby Atmos?

Doubtful. Atmos requires either ceiling or upfiring speakers and there’s no way that the HomePod can duplicate that. Really, the best you might get with the new HomePods, assuming apple is doing some magic with the speakers, might be some semblance of a 3.0 setup with a center channel for better dialogue audio.
