I have an iMac 17 inch with BT 1.1 inside. I would like to, eventually, upgrade that to BT 2.0. Will this be a simple firmware/software type of upgrade? or will it be a hardware issue? And if it is a hardware issue, how would someone who has an all-in-one iMac type of computer go about upgrading it?

It would probably take the form of an external USB dongle, much like current bluetooth dongles. They're only small and plug directly into an available USB port.
You cannot change the internal bluetooth module. I doubt very much that it's upgradable with new firmware/software because I'm 99% certain Bluetooth 2 hardware is slightly different.
