Hi, I'm about to buy an iphone of a family member.

The touch screen is broke on it but I can get one of ebay and I've seen how to replace them on youtube.

All I wanna know really is, how do you find out what Generation it is, so I can get the right screen. And whats the general shelf life on them.

She has had it for about a year and she bought it off her friend, so I dont want to be getting it then goes on the blink after about a month or so.:confused::confused:

Can you describe the shape?

Like this:

Or like this:

Ignore the colour.

Or even this:

I wouldn't buy an iPhone that's been previously owned twice. I would just go to your local carrier and get one at a subsidized price. You'll really get more for your money that way.

No offense, but if you don't know how to find out what kind generation it is you're going to struggle replacing the screen!

And the shelf life of the screen or the phone in general?

Hiya Stridemat, I havent actually got the phone yet, she is deleting all her messages and getting her pictures and music of it to put on the computer. I just know its got a white back thats all, it could be the 1st picture you shown, but I'd be guessing. Thanks anyway.

And to be honest Kilamite, I'm not that thick but I've never owned or used an iphone, so I wouldn't know to look at one. I thought if anyone could tell me how to find out, like maybe going into the menu and looking in the system info or something. Can you do that, I dont know.

And Kyotoma, thanks for your advice too, but I'm only paying £60 for it, if I got a year out of it, I'd be happy with that.

Cheers Quizzi!!!

Go this web site and enter the phone's serial number:

http://support.apple.com/specs/

The serial number is located: Settings, General, About.

The device type will be displayed once you enter the serial.

To be honest, the cost of replacing the screen may make this a bad purchase considering you can get a 3GS for $50.

You might struggle if the screen doesn't work.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_4 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8K2 Safari/6533.18.5)

I don't know about your carriers out where you live Tony, but out here you can buy a new iPhone 3GS for less than that on contract.
