generating editable sequences in FCP 4.5

Im trying to work out how to create sequences that i can move into other sequences in order to create motion paths for them.

the only option i have seems to be to create a quicktime movie of the clip and reimport it, thus making it editable within the context of the main sequence.

But once i do this i lose the ability to re-edit the clip should i need to, without making a new QT movie and reinporting it.

will i lose any quality using this method?

You could nest the Sequence. (Sequence->Nest Items)

but the nest isnt directly editable in another sequence, double click to open it in the viewer and it opens the nest and all the clips within it. i cannot create keyframes for it as a single clip.

Option-double-click the sequence to open in Viewer. Regular double-click will, as you said, open on the Timeline.
