Actually the chip in the thunderbolt cable is for signal conditioning. It's how they get those things to the length they are at the data rates they support.
 
There is too much money at stake. Someone will decap and reverse engineer it. Microsoft tried the same thing with Xbox 360 accessories
 
"Third Party" does not necessarily mean "knock-off."

MFi partners can right now buy the different flavors of the lightning connector from Apple, which does indeed have the authentication chip in it.
