Generic Macbook Superdrive/Combo Drive uj-857-c <---Whats up with the C?

The cheapest replacements I found were 199 new at ifixit and 129 used on ebay.

that's a ton of money, considering you can buy regular UJ-857 (non "C" version) drives for $60 anywhere.

so what's up with the C? Can i use a non-c drive? Is there a good generic drive out there?

C model will have Apple firmware on it. Non-C won't.

Maybe there is a way to install the firmware on the non-C drives ??
