So this might be a dumb question, but it’s a problem that arose recently when I had to finally retire a iPod mini that had died. I have other iPods, but I also have two generic mp3 players.

Other than dragging files over, is anyone aware of say a media manager?

There is XNJB, which was designed primarily for use with the Creative Nomad and ZEN MP3 players, but does also offer compatibility with a wide range of others thanks to its built-in libmtp libraries. And as a plus, it also offers native PowerPC compatibility. Not sure if it works with iPods though.

Someone should really add this to the Garden, now that I think of it ...

A generic algorithm is to check what exists open-source with a required functionality, if that is found, check MacPorts, if no port exists, see if that can be built in some other way.
