Background..

- Bought iPhone 5 on launch day (sept 21)

- I have no warranty of any kind

- broke screen twice but it works fine

I called the apple store and asked them if it costs money to replace it and the guy said to make an appointment with the Genius Bar because sometimes they can "work something out"

Anyone have any tips on how to get them to replace it for free? My plan is to be extra nice, maybe mention that I'm giving this to my brother as a gift and I will be buying the new iPhone (but then they might think I have money so they might charge me?). Maybe I should act broke?

Any ideas? Experiences? Did you get it replaced for free or was there a charge?

Thanks all!

Thanks for not posting the below :)

You are going to pay to get it fixed. How broke is it? Is the screen broke or the glass?

The glass is broken. I don't think it's deep enough to mess up the screen. Wish I could take a pic. Have you paid for it before then? How much was it?

Phone replacement is like 250 i think..

Usually if you are polite and the phone looks dangerous to operate they will work something out.

That can range from offering to allow you to purchase applecare+ and paying the deductible to replacing it for no cost or at a discount. It really depends who you deal with and if either them or a manager wants to extend you a courtesy.

Google iPhone out of warranty repair to get the price.

Regardless of how deep it is the screen is bonded to the digitiser and thus one unit. You'll pay one way or another.

Some people consider it dangerous cause the glass rubs off on your fingers :). Maybe I should approach it with that angle.

Just approach it with honesty and if a courtesy is not offered to you just ask for something. It's really the only thing you can do.

The out-of-warranty cost is $230..trust me I know I dropped my 5 in the toilet last night (thankfully it's working again after rice and heating), but Apple stores should be able to fix the glass without replacing the phone, I believe the glass repairs are $150. Ask for a repair instead of a replacement :D

if its just the screen, order the parts yourself (around $100 from amazon) and DIY. Unlike the 4/4s, the 5/5s only require 5 screws be removed. The first two are the bottom ones next to the lightning port and the other 3 are the ones connecting the cable. takes 3 minutes if your really careful. If you dont feel comfortable doing it yourself, you can get it done for around $125 at local repair shops (give or take a little $). dont pay the oow fee. Its not worth it

My sentiments exactly, the 5/5s is a relatively easy repair with little-to-no experience needed. Just go on YouTube and follow a guide there, or go to ifixit.com!

Cool thanks guys. I will give it a shot today and if they are going to charge me, I will just order the parts online and do it myself.

Update. Went to the apple store and they wouldn't do anything unless I paid 150.

Do it myself it is.

I will say this: I'm fairly tech savvy, but I'm not a nano-surgeon. I tried to fix my kid's cracked-screen iPod, and it's not as easy as you might think.

I would ask how much it is to get it repaired at some other location (besides the apple store)... there are mall kiosks that do the repair while you shop.

How much are the parts you're ordering?

For the iPod, it was $69 or something for the kit; $99 if I had them do it. Never again will I try it myself. Wasted waaaaay more than $30 of my time to fart around with the repair.

YMMV.

Ouchhh, guess I missed that memo. Wonder what justified the jump, the phone is only getting older with the 5S right around the corner.

Holy cannoli a $40 price jump? D: Jeez this coupled with the increase in Apple Care+ service costs.. they're just trying to make more money off the service end because people will end up having no other option.
