Genmoji is a great feature and I love the *idea* that I can base it on myself but when I try to generate a genmoji based on my photo (I told the photos app to associate pictures of me with my contact card). But when I create a genmoji it still doesn’t show the option to select myself like I see in the videos and tutorials of people showing how to use it.

What am I missing? Did I forget to do a step to make it work?

I wasn't even aware Genmoji was meant to support images based on people!

The support article makes it look like the only intended way to involve a person in a Genmoji is to textually reference someone Photos would know the appearance of.

I’ve tried that to no avail. The first screenshot is from a YouTube video with the feature working properly. The second is of my phone when I try to do it. It allows me to select one of 3 generic emoji people and doesn’t show anything related to me whatsoever. I have myself tagged in photos and I have a Memoji set up too. But nothing comes up for genmoji.

Did you get a fix for this? Exact same for me. I can choose literally anyone apart from me - the owner of the phone!

For other people searching and getting here that way (like me): this "bug" still isn't fixed as of March 2025. I can't find a clear and obvious reason why some people show up and some people don't. I have someone I've tagged a lot in Photos but they still won't show up either my iPhone or my Mac.

I'm putting "bug" in air quotes because I suspect there's a reason why these people aren't showing up. Maybe that number of tags in Photos might ≠ clear enough information for Apple Intelligence to pass some acceptable certainty threshold to create an emoji based on a face.

What makes this even more frustrating is that with Image Playground you can hit a button and choose any picture in your camera roll of any person as your subject matter.

With genmoji you're stuck with the photos (and people) some nebulous process chooses that you don't seem to have control over.

I filed feedback about this during the beta process. I had hoped that it would change before the general release.
