hi all
i am new to macbook but experienced in linux.
I have a old macbook a1181. It does not have any os in it. I want to install gentoo. I made a bootable usb using netbeans on windows. But it is not working. Macbook makes some kind of noise upon startup and end up flashing a folder icon with question mark on it. plz help.

You used netbeans the programming IDE to create a bootable USB, or is my google-fu used up for today?

Try creating a bootable Ubuntu stick using something like unetbootin, instead. With that old macbook, I think you'd better create a 32-bit OS image. Once you get Ubuntu running properly, I guess you should be able to backwards engineer the process required to get Gentoo running.
