It is being dubbed the new "bullet-proof bra", a new kind of Wonderbra which could help protect thousands of women police officers here in Germany.

It may sound like a joke, but this is a serious matter - the policewoman who came up with the idea said normal bras can be dangerous when worn in combination with a bullet-proof vest.

"The impact of a bullet can push the metal and plastic bits of the bra into an officer's body, causing serious injury," said Carmen Kibat, an adviser on equal opportunities for the Hamburg-based Bundespolizei - Germany's federal police force.

"I always thought normal bras posed a safety risk and I wanted to change that," she said.

"These new bras are very important and they will help all our women officers."
BBC. :D

Have I missed the stories about German policewomen getting shot in the tits?

They still should depend on the vest to protect them. Get a running bra, and there's no metal to break loose.

If I'm reading the article right, they do still depend on the bulletproof vest – these bras are made like sports bras with no metal or plastic parts. Presumably policewomen could just wear sports bras instead, but these police issue ones they know for sure there are no parts in it that could damage them.

My understanding as well.
Won't stop the jokes though. ;)

What we need to test out this theory is a bra model, this bra, a bulletproof vest, guns, bullets, me, and lube. Even if this bra doesn't work, at least one of us will get lucky.

If it reduces the chance of a female officer from getting seriously injured that's all good; imagine a vest saving and officer from the bullet, but the underwire of her bra pierces her chest! Bullet proof or not, getting shot in the chest is going to hurt!

But one can't help asking ... Why hasn't somebody made boxers with a bullet proof cup?

Your not cutting the crap are you, lets get down to solid facts... :p

What about the "Bro" version....
You two are making it hard for me not to post what I'm thinking. :p

On a serious note, I used to know some NY city policemen. They all had backup weapons and such. But what amazed me, is the number who wore a cup. Guess the bad guys go for the family jewels. Anyhow, seeing this bra improvement is great for those females who serve as police officers.

Sounds like that would be a fun Mythbuster episode.
