Get maps to use streets instead of freeways?

I was late to work today and the freeway had an accident, so I didn't want to use the freewY naturally, but to my surprise and annoyance the only 2 ways I was shown involved the freeway but when I clicked on my google maps I could choose to take a route involving only streets, so could anyone enlighten me on a setting to change for apple maps or what ?!

The only alternative is a non-stock app (like google maps). Maps provided by Apple looks like it's still in Beta and works like it too lol.

Yeah Google Maps is far superior. Especially now that they've acquired Waze. Traffic information is top notch and so is alternate routes
