OWC this week knocked the price of the popular 14-Port Thunderbolt 3 Dock down to $99.99, from its original price of $279.99, and this deal is still around this weekend. This is a match of the all-time low price on the accessory, which we last tracked way back in April.

This model has been around a number of years and while it showed promise, I must say I have been disappointed with mine. The dock randomly ejects connected devices, and calls to (otherwise stellar) OWC support over the years has resulted in nothing more than installing a patch on my system that only sort of solved the problem. I think there are better devices out there, especially for Thunderbolt 4.

…and I have been an OWC customer since it was run out of a garage.

OWC has always left a bad taste in my mouth from when then were selling those scammy "thermal sensors" for replacing iMac drives when all you actually needed was a sata y splitter

edit

looks like they're still selling them

This is a garbage company with garbage products. I've given them about 80 chances, which is my own fault, but they've never ceased to let me down. I don't know how they're still in business.

$99 on amazon, normal price is $129
Case in point ... they're liars. They put an exorbitantly high price on their website to make it look like you're getting a big deal. 30 bucks off is a far cry from 180 bucks off.

Terrible dock and I would NEVER recommend anything from OWC. I purchased this dock years ago and it was just awful. Constant disconnects and crashes...huge pile of hot garbage. I even added another TB4 Dock to daisy chain and that caused even more headaches. That company will never get another dime of my money.

If you want a dock that actually works, hit up the Ivanki FusionDock Max 1 for $379.99. Expensive but well worth it. I have one and it absoultely rocks. Incredibly fast and has pretty much every port you could possibly need.

Apple does the same, you can buy a mac air for 100 cheaper on Amazon

Apple's prices have always been high, but they don't lie about their list pricing. OWC says this dock is normally $279.99 when it's actually $129.99. Amazon having a sale on Apple devices isn't even remotely the same thing. OWC is arbitrarily inflating their list price to make it seem like people are getting a better deal than they actually are.

Looks good but I'm curious why they dropped the price on the dock so much ?
It is the last generation tachnology. No one would buy this for a new Mac. They'd want TB4 and maybe even 10GBE Ethernet.

It would be usfull for the last generation of Intel macs but people usually buy accessories when thy buy the new compuiter. So I doubt this is selling well.

I did just buy a TB4 enclosure for M.2 SSD. OWC had it on sale and it is reasonably fast.

The $279.99 price tag most likely indicates when this was introduced, circa 2017. Unfortunately, it's also 2017 technology, which you can tell based on the five USB-A ports and the display port. It's like buying an iPhone X today for $129 and being told you scored over $1000 in savings.
Close ... it apparently came out in 2018.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. Same model, and constantly having drives ejected at random moment , very unreliable. I'm not sure what to replace it with , without paying an arm and a leg.

Fair enough :)
Your point remains the same. This is old technology ... and this "sale" price is still probably more than it's worth.

I've not tried THIS ONE myself because of the price (i.e. an arm and a leg), but I've heard good things about it. These docks are expensive.

If you want good quality, buy CalDigit TS3 Plus or TS4.

They seem to always be highly rated; if I were to buy one today that's the brand I'd chose. I have an old Kensington that is still going strong, and I really don't need higher TB speeds as I have no TB accessories; the main things I use it for is charging my MBP M3, connecting to an ancient Canon all in one, a DVI monitor and a HDD for Time Machine backups. Occasionally I charge my iPone from the PD USB port.

Yeah I can second this. My OWC dock failed, I decided to pack it back in its box and will probably pitch it sometime soon.

Can also confirm that it gets pretty hot, too.

I’ve heard enough people call them out for producing hot garbage juice to say there’s nothing to it and this kind of price drop tends to lend itself to that theory.

I bought a doc for my 14” M3 MacBook Pro that included multiple HDMI ports with Display Link to get around the monitor limitation originally in that model (which I read Apple was going to do away with via an update when they shipped the M3 MacBook Airs that could handle more than one external monitor but don’t know if they delivered on it or not due to having and using the dock) for just north of $100 and I don’t think there’s a port this OWC dock has that the one I bought doesn’t have. So I’d say that price pre-discount is ridiculous at this point. Maybe not in 2021/2022 but it’s 2024 now.

To get quality you need to spend actual money. That’s just the way it is.

I have had good luck with the Caldigit brand. My original one is still going strong even with an M1pro BMP 16”. If it ever failed I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another.

For $400 it doesn’t have a S/PDIF digital audio port 😞
Maybe I should look for a more advanced model ?

The TS4 was on sale for $320 (20% off) during Amazon Prime Days. I finally splurged and grabbed one since it was the lowest I've ever seen it. I've had my eyes on it since late last year.

There is a similar/cheaper model sold in the Apple Store that is supposedly the same thing, but silver instead of space gray...the CalDigit Thunderbolt 4 Pro Dock for $330.
