Getting 3G iPhone from roommate, can I put on EDGE plan?

So here's the story. Yesterday morning I dropped my edge iPhone and the bottom half of the touch screen no longer responds. My roommate has decided he isn't sure he wants his 3G iPhone any longer. We had proposed I get his iPhone while he gets my old AT&T phone (he has no other GSM phone), and of course I'll pay him some money.

Since I am not going to be purchasing a new phone, and already have my EDGE plan still active. Do you think it would be possible to simply put my SIM into the 3G phone? (I already have a 3G capable SIM so that's not a problem). Will AT&T be wise to this and just up my contract automatically?

AT&T will see that you're using an iPhone 3G and change your plan. It's been talked about many times here.
