My dad upgraded his G3 iBook with Tiger a few months ago.
However, last week a power surge fried his laptop and killed it.

He is getting a macbook tomorrow (obviously with Tiger pre-installed).

Will I legally be allowed to use the copy of Tiger he purchased a few months ago? I would love to install in on my powerbook.

I believe that you could use the license for Tiger on your powerbook, since it will only be installed on one computer. The only question I have is if you are a minor, living in your father's house. If you are 30 and living on your own, he may not legally be able to transfer the license to you. Not sure about this though, since I believe one can sell Tiger to another person...

Short answer, I think you'll be fine.

I disagree. I'm pretty sure the licence stipulates you can only use Tiger on the exact machine it came bundled with. Also, most modern releases of OSX will simply not install on different types of machines. In other words, you can't use an iMac's discs with an iBook or whatever. :(

But since he purchased the OSX disk to install on a G3, wouldn't it not be tied to a preinstalled configuration? It seems to me that an off-the-shelf copy should be transferrable.

No, he asked if he can use the copy which was purchased prior to the new machine.

I see no reason why not, personally.

Thanks for the prompt responses.

Do you think I'll run into hany hassles during the installation process, when registering with Apple?

Or am I worrying for nothing?

Hot Damn - I'm excited.

I been wanting Tiger for ages - just didn't have the money for it - and then realised it would be better to wait for Leopard.

Thanks again for the help/advice.
