new card being the ATI Radeon HD 3870. will the release of the new card drive down the price of the dual 256 ATI 2600 XT or (even better) make it the standard?

I don't think it will change the price of 2600.
The 3 series will be supposed to close the gap between the 2600 and 8800 so I think not much will change.
I know I am holding with replacing my 2600 as I want to see what how will this ATI perform.

Why dual 2600's? You aren't planning CrossFire, are you? Not supported under Mac OS.
