When I bought my Airport Express, I found out that my all-in-one HP PSC 1210 was not supported. Bad luck, so I decided to go for a wireless printer. All the stories I've been reading on wireless printers and in particular the HP ones (e.g. the HP C4580 and C6380) didn't give me a lot of confidence that this is a good solution. For most people this seems to have turned out into some sort of nightmare. Therefore, I decided to spend some more effort on getting the printer I already have to work on Airport. YES, I did manage to get things to work by using the HPIJS drivers.

Check out this URL: http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs and follow the instructions. That is: first install Ghostscript, then install Foomatic-RIP and then install HPIJS. I am using an iMac 20" with Leopard 10.5.7, by the way.

Connect the PSC 1210 (using the USB interface) to the Airport Express, switch it on and go to "Print & Fax" in your OS X system preferences. Add a new printer by clicking the "+". If "default" is selected as the "printer type", the printer should appear automatically as a "bonjour device". Select it and most of the things that have to be filled in, will be filled in automatically. In the drop-down next to "Print Using", select "HP PSC 1210 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended)". You're done now and should be able to use your printer on Airport.

Many printers that are not supported "out-of-the-box" on Airport, are supported through the HPIJS drivers, so the above method may also work in many other situations.

I am planning to have a look at the HPLIP drivers to also be able to use the scan functionality.
