Getting an unlocked iPhone 5 from the US

Hello all,

I have read that Verizon's iPhones come GSM unlocked, but can I get them contract free? Like pay the full $700 price and just use it on any other GSM network?

If not, can I purchase it from AT&T with the full price and have it unlocked?
